This series of four blog posts provides an update on committee activity relating to the potential impacts of Brexit on environmental and agricultural policy across the UK legislatures. It also explores areas that will have impact on these policy areas including international trade, immigration and any potential changes to devolution settlements.

This series sign-posts to committee inquiries held during the summer and autumn and will cover 1) The National Assembly for Wales, 2) The Scottish Parliament, 3) The House of Commons and 4) The House of Lords (with recognition that Northern Ireland Assembly Committees remain dissolved).

Substance misuse – what the latest statistics show

There are estimated to be 49,370 people (PDF, 4.08MB) in Wales aged 15-64 using opioids, cocaine and crack, amphetamine and new psychoactive substances. In 2016, 20% of adults (PDF, 4.08MB) said they drink over the weekly alcohol guidelines.

According to the latest statistics overall demand for substance misuse services is not increasing. Recent data from the Welsh National Database for Substance Misuse suggest a reduction in 2016-17 in the number of people accessing assessment and treatment for substance misuse. However, there was an increase in the number of drug related deaths in 2016-17.

In September 2017 the Economy, Infrastructure and Skills Committee published its report into Digital Infrastructure in Wales. During this inquiry, Members looked into the issues hampering broadband and mobile coverage in Wales, and what policies the Welsh Government should pursue to improve the situation. Since then, the Welsh Government has published its Mobile Action Plan, setting out how it wants to improve mobile coverage in Wales. Will this be enough to close the mobile coverage gap between Wales and the other UK nations?

The Welsh Language Commissioner Annual Report 2016-17

On Tuesday 14th November 2017, a debate will be held in Plenary on the Welsh Language Commissioner’s Annual Report 2016-17.

The statutory report provides information and details regarding the work of the Commissioner and a review of issues relevant to the Welsh language during the reporting year.

The Commissioner recently appeared before the Culture, Welsh Language and Communications Committee (CWLC Committee) to discuss her report.
