Why do literacy and numeracy now have a much higher profile within education policy in Wales?  This is a very topical question and the Research Service has produced a research paper entitled ‘Literacy and Numeracy in Wales’, which provides information and analysis on what exactly is happening.

Literacy and numeracy in Wales The research paper sets out the context of the Welsh Government’s policy interventions in respect of literacy and numeracy and seeks to explain the importance with which these are being undertaken. The paper gives details of the new Literacy and Numeracy Framework, which becomes a statutory requirement from September 2013, and the introduction of national tests in reading and numeracy on an annual basis from May 2013.  It also discusses some of the responses within the teaching sector to these policies and draws on other evidence to explore issues relating to children’s literacy and numeracy in Wales.
